This is a stale argument I’m sure but I’ll try to add my insight to it. The internet is a wondrous fantastical globulous thing that lives in the air around our heads (and entire bodies) and the servers inside company walls. The internet allows anyone who has access to it to communicate almost instantaneously with each other even if they are separated by thousands of miles, something that no one a hundred years ago would have been able to imagine. However, there are two things (that come to mind) that the internet has brought about that I do not like. One thing that internet has done is desensitize whoever uses it for an extended amounts of time. The other thing that it has brought about is, for lack of a better word, meanness. I guess hostility is a better word but moving on! Coincidentally, the two go hand in hand. The more meanness (ya I think I’m going to stick with it) there is, the more people become desensitized to the whole thing. I’ll elaborate a bit more. Because the internet allows you the mask of anonymity people feel that they can say anything or do anything. A few examples are trolling, griefing, and cheating. (in the sense that the cheater gives themselves powers that are overpowered and unbalances the game for others) I think to myself, “what is the point? What is the enjoyment factor in that?” it just does not make sense to me. And then because of this general meanness, you tend not to give people the benefit of the doubt and assume that they will be mean to you. So in then end you close yourself off from other players and just try to get through a game without incident. This applies to people who play video games more than anything but you also see it in YouTube comments for example. People can be very cruel and unforgiving. It makes you feel that there is just no point, that no matter what you do you just can’t please people. This is where the desensitizing come in. To the previous generation, the amount of verbal abuse, or written abuse in the case, that is said over the internet would shock and appall them. To the current generation however, it is natural, they just shrug it off and move on to the next thing. You can say this is beneficial in that they can handle more and are tougher for it but then I would argue back that the desensitized nature bleeds over into other aspects of their life. A breathtaking waterfall is just a waterfall. The moon landing? It happened. The Holocaust? ya, I wasn’t there so it doesn’t apply to me. Those are some extreme example but you get the point. I’m writing about this because I consider it an important topic that should not be ignored. Obviously you can not change everyone and you can not make everyone behave a certain way but if everyone just keeps in mind that behind each screen and username is another human being, I think that would go a long way. Thanks for reading this, I know it was a long one. Enjoy the rest of your day, or if it is night, then enjoy tomorrow!
